While virtually the entire security world was in San Francisco last week, our elected officials on the other coast held what they called Cyber Legislation Week. While it may not have been an official name, there was movement on several important pieces of legislation and some new legislation was even introduced. With the number of new cyber bills being introduced, it’s almost as if Congress wants to pass something—anything—relating to information security before the end of this session.

Tenable Network Security, the leading provider of vulnerability management and continuous network monitoring solutions, conducted a survey in April 2015 with renowned research company Vanson Bourne to understand the current state of cybersecurity within 400 UK and German organisations. Twenty questions were posed to identify the threats faced, some of the core controls deployed within businesses and how effectively they are operationalising security technologies.

“When it came to information security awareness, we wanted to get much more of a visceral response from our people than we were getting up to then. Before, we were simply selling. You must do this. You must do that. Without any real interaction with the people,” said Thom Langford (@thomlangford), CISO of the Publicis Groupe, about his agency’s new “marketing focused” direction for internal security awareness.

Over this past week, I attended both the Security B-Sides conference and the RSA Conference in San Francisco.

The person who has signed onto the phone is not necessarily the person using the phone. If you’re a parent who has ever handed your phone to a child, or you’re a teenager who has unlocked your phone and handed it to a friend, you know that this behavior happens all the time.
