Tenable Selected by Hyogo Prefecture to Harden its Active Directory Security
April 4, 2023 · Tokyo, Japan
Tenable®, Inc. the Exposure Management company, today announced that Hyogo Prefecture, Japan’s gateway to the Asia Pacific, has chosen Tenable Active Directory to identify existing vulnerability indicators early and take proactive steps to remediate them.
Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan is a tourist destination, transportation hub and major economic center, with a population of over five million people. The region is on a journey to improve the accessibility and quality of administrative services for its residents through the use of information technology.
To meet local government guidelines, Hyogo Prefecture transitioned its administrative systems and staff computers over to Hyogo Prefecture Information Security Cloud. As the security backbone of the Information Security Cloud, Active Directory (AD) was one of the central components being used to manage user accounts and client terminals. Realizing that AD is at the center of numerous cyberattacks and breaches, Hyogo Prefecture turned to Tenable to strengthen its AD to prevent the “keys to the kingdom” from landing in the wrong hands.
“Hyogo Prefecture has always been diligent in applying security patches but we’ve never had a product to identify vulnerabilities and misconfigurations in AD. All it takes is one single compromise within AD to jeopardize the entire organization. This was a huge security gap that we needed to address immediately,” Kenichiro Tanaka, Unit Chief, Hyogo Prefecture, Department of Planning, Digital Transformation Section, System Planning Unit. “Since we were already using Nessus for security vulnerability checks, we knew Tenable Active Directory would be the perfect fit for us.”
After deploying Tenable Active Directory, within a few weeks Hyogo Prefecture was relieved that it was able to identify unused accounts and delete a significant number of unnecessary objects from AD. These were primarily dormant accounts of staff members who had retired or transferred.
Hyogo Prefecture was also able to stay on top of tracking the status of dormant accounts and password policy compliance, as well as account trust relationships, inappropriate configurations, and changes in AD.
“Ever since we deployed Tenable Active Directory, our compliance scores have improved dramatically. We’re able to identify risk items individually and view the recommended remediation for each one. Compliance scores can also be generated as audit reports, and this allows us to periodically generate reports to monitor the scores on an ongoing basis. Our ability to perform these tasks has contributed greatly to improving the security of AD,” said Tanaka.
“Active Directory technology is over two decades old and has many moving parts that attackers can exploit. With some high-profile attacks in the last few years using AD, it’s more important than ever to make AD security a key part of the overall cybersecurity strategy,” said Naoya Kishima, Country Manager, Tenable Japan. “Hyogo Prefecture has recognized the need to harden Active Directory security to protect its prefecture and we are glad to be part of their security journey.”
